I've hated western for quite a while, and a few friends have reported the
same problem with vibrations lately.
Anyhow I've switched to strictly seagate ever since they went to the 5 year
warranty.
I had one western drive that died LESS than 30 days after the warranty
expired, and they refused to do anything. Even the supervisor sent me the
same note.
Seagate I've never had issues with. I had 2 drives at one point that were
dead, called seagate, one was barely making it in warranty, and the second
was over 6 months expired. Seagate actually issued me an RMA for both
drives, and replaced them without hesitation.
I don't know if western has finally struck an agreement, but I used to hate
having to deal with cross border shipping in order to get an exchange from
them. At least with Seagate and Maxtor, they have agreements with compnies
like memofix, and others.. in Ontario, so you don't need to deal with cross
border shipping, you send it to them, and they ship one back to you.
Cheaper to ship, quicker, and less of a hassle especially if they f$@# the
tarrification codes and you get stuck with duties, taxes, etc... which you
need to file forms to claim back. Not worth my time to save $10 on initial
purchase.
.just my $0.02 worth... :)
